Moving to New York

I'm thinking of moving to Manhattan. How'd you think a young finance scientist would do there. My income would be from financial sciences and trading. I'm a minimalist, have never had a failed business and like th recreational activities Manhattan has to offer.

All hat and no cattle is right.

Dude is a poser, based on his prior posts, a complete idiot thats here to pump up his ego, without realizing he is having the opposite result.

But yeah, go ahead, move to Manhattan, you won't last 5 minutes there.

Look up Gina Rollins though, been in the game a LONG time, she can teach you a thing or two.

Did the LA one have little cliff diver statues all over the wall like the one in NYC?
If yes, then it was part of the small chain.

If you’re in finance and can get a good job at an investment bank, you’ll do fine and that’s where you want to be.

Apartments are ridiculously expensive for what you get. There are lots of housing scams on Craigslist and other sites. If it’s too good to be true, you’re going to get scammed, so be careful.

According to my friend, besides pizza and pasta, the food in Vegas is likely much better than what you’ll find in NYC because the produce from California and Mexico is substantially better than what you can get on the East Coast.

Male to female ratio is excellent; you’ll do fine there so long as you’re not hideous.

It’s a fun and vibrant city with a crazy amount of activities. Always something to do there.

Good luck with your move.

Completely went to shit during de Blasio's reign and has not recovered.
That crazy fuck was owned by the unions, he'd wake up late and have his driver take him to the gym in Brooklyn about 10am, then basically blew off work most days but show up now and then to utter some non-sensical Progressive bullshit.......total asshole.

I’m in NYC now for a few days.

So far, the Lower East Side is the coolest and funnest area, and it isn’t insanely expensive. Lots of bars and restaurants with outdoor seating. Crowd is younger. Late 20’s, 30’s.

East and West Village are also cool areas. Washington Square Park and around NYU.

The DUMBO Brooklyn area is really nice with great views of Manhattan and close to the fun of the Lower East Side.

The Financial District is nice but boring.

I’m staying in the Upper West Side, which is expensive and relatively boring.

I’ve had the pastrami at Katz’s before, which is amazing. I’ll have it again if there’s no line.

I’m visiting the Guggenheim tomorrow and I’m going to the Comedy Cellar tonight, which should be really fun.

Another tip: visit the building you are considering living in at night. You may be living above a loud restaurant or bar that could keep you up until 2am or later, so you need to know what you’re getting yourself into. The Lower East Side is fun (here now) but it’s fucking loud and lively. People are out in the streets. Cool and fun area. It’s where you want to be in NYC now, but it could be really loud to live in.

I think you’re referring to the Festival of San Gennaro. I walked through it a couple of times already. Will be back sometime today after the Guggenheim. It’s nice and has plenty of food vendors that look like they’d be a tasty option. The women were definitely attractive.

Had dinner at Peter Lugar last Thursday. It was difficult to make that reservation over three weeks ago, so I suspect it would be impossible to get one for tonight. Thanks for the offer, though. If you do go to Brooklyn, go to the rooftop of 1 Hotel. It’s easily the best view of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge and the women were hot there as well. Really impressive spot to take friends or a date or relax over a drink.

If you think the cost of living in So Cal is bad, wait until you get to NYC. Sounds if you're rather naive and clueless. I would strongly suggest you stay where you are until you do some solid research.

Here are my ending thoughts on living in NYC.

There is no doubt that the city is cool and can satisfy practically any interest.

Unlike LA or OC, you’re essentially surrounded by people of all walks of life, cultures, shapes and sizes. It’s insane how much humanity is here and you’re immersed into it especially if you take the subway regularly. It’s crazy how many people you come across in a single day.

Quality of life compared to LA/OC and Vegas is not that good unless you’re loaded. $2k to $3.5k month gets you a shithole 1 bedroom that hasn’t been updated in 40 years in a nice neighborhood. It’s unrealistic to expect to get something nice in NYC because rent control fucks up everything here. If you can be lucky enough to sublet a rent control apartment at a reduced price, the apartment is going to be run down because any improvements to it would disqualify the unit for rent control. It’s a horrible system.

Funnest thing I did here was ride e-bikes along the riverfront Greenway trail (away from traffic) that spans the entire island along the Hudson River between Manhattan and Jersey. Also rode on the Brooklyn bridge to the Lower East Side. Really fun and convenient. Bike lanes everywhere in Manhattan. But you need to be able to ride a bike and deftly watch for and avoid being hit by traffic.

One of the coolest things you can do is go to the tiny food/jazz venues in the city. The one we went to was Tomi Jazz, which has a maximum capacity of 28 people and located in a small basement. Great Japanese food and live jazz. Mood lighting. Felt like we were in a scene from Blade Runner. Great for taking a date or hanging with a friend. Worth the wait.

Went to Martiny’s, which was rated the best cocktail bar in NYC. High end, limited to 2 hours, another Japanese establishment. $30 drinks were good but I wouldn’t go back.

Took the free Stanton Island Ferry that had great views of the Statue of Liberty, then noticed the Beast was waiting dockside for Biden to land (security everywhere). Later read that Biden went to dinner at Il Cantinori.

Closing thoughts: if you’re 30 years old and wanting to work in finance, I say go for it but don’t expect to live like a king. Quality of life isn’t going to be good unless you spend big money. It will be one of the most memorable periods of your life because living in NYC is cool. I still prefer LA.
