Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said this week that the Biden administration planned to waive 26 environmental, public health and cultural preservation laws in order to fast-track constructing sections of the border wall in South Texas.
Mayorkas said the laws would ease to address migrant crossings between ports of entry in the Rio Grande Valley this year. The administration would use funds from a 2019 appropriation designated by Congress to construct the wall, which was spurred by a disaster declaration by the Trump administration.
The Biden administration paused construction in January 2021 after it revoked the disaster declaration. Between 2017 and the pause, around 458 miles of border wall had been constructed on the southern border — 55 miles of wall in Texas.
Now, Mayorkas said he could waive these laws under Section 102 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act.
“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States,” he wrote, citing 245,000 migrant crossings between ports of entry in the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley sector since last year.
The move was a sharp deviation from the Biden administration's previous statements declaring that no more border wall would be constructed.

I agree that the border situation is a clusterfuck. However, we should look at the wall designed and constructed during the Trump administration as a "proof in concept." Clearly that wall did not stop people from going over it (or even through it). A better design is needed.
Why not make a better design and put 20 miles of it up as a test and see how effective it is before committing millions and millions of dollars to hundreds of miles of it, just to realize that it is worthless?

we NEED a wall for various segments...it will free up manpower they don't have. matter of fact, ANY fucking wall will free up manpower. that's what they do...it's not the end all be all...it's meant make it harder and deter some from even trying. will people still get over or under? yes. will 8000 a day? probably not
so instead of 200 people patrolling that segment...they can do it with 5 people. whatever the numbers are. it will be less. AGREE?

It's not a case of trying to find the "perfect" wall, just the most effective one. One that can justify the expense.
I also think we should build a huge detention facilities right on the border with a back gate that opens directly into Mexico. As soon as they are processed, kick them out the back door!
Requests for asylum should be made BEFORE entering the U.S.
If someone is caught in the U.S. illegally they should be barred from ever getting asylum status. If they show a willingness to break our most basic laws then they should not be allowed in.
I also think there should be military "training" facilities at the border with the expressed purpose of "training" drone operators, trackers, ground sensor monitoring, dog handlers, etc. The illegals would make for good practice and training. The mere presence or these troops at the border would be intimidating enough to help with the deterrence factor. We spend that money anyway, why not dual-purpose it!
I know this sounds radical but we have a pretty clear history of trying things that don't work. Time for some fresh thinking.
