I would like to think that our president would surround himself with the smartest people he could find. DJT was not interested in that, he only wanted to surround himself with those that pledged their loyalty to him. That is why he is the position he finds himself in now, his not-to-smart "people" were giving him very bad advice (or simply telling him what he wanted to hear).

When Israel was established in 1948 the Arab population was given the chance to participate in the government. Most did not and chose to destroy all the Jews they could. Since then Arab attacks have been met with strong retribution resulting in Palestinian cries of suffering.
Hamas treats the Palestinian civilians terribly and uses their suffering to get money that they use to buy weapons and construct tunnels.
Netanyahu and his party have been abusing the Palestinians for years. More than any retribution can justify. He, like Trump, is a wannabe dictator. The lack of intelligence concerning the recent Hamas attacks is suspicious. (There is a rumor, with some evidence, that Roosevelt knew Pearl Harbor was coming.)
Egypt and Jordan have long refused sanctuary for Palestinians. They once tried, but eventually expelled them. However, Egypt allows tunnels to Gaza which are used for smuggling arms. I was amazed at how many rockets Hamas had despite years of Israeli blockade.
Most Hx'ers are too young to know the history of Israel. It has all happened within my lifetime.
I recommend the book EXODUS by Leon Uris. Entertaining and informative.

DJT lost the 2020 election by a convincing margin of actual votes, clearly having lost a lot of independent voters, as well as some Republicans.
Since the 2020 election, DJT has lost even more support with ALL of the people outside of the Republican polls, and continues to lose more support every day.
Polls can be easily manipulated, and DJT is a master at manipulation. If you only poll known MAGA voters of course he will have a convincing lead. DJT loves nothing more than to proclaim his greatness by surrounding himself with fanatical supporters and inflated poll numbers.
DJT may be the Republican candidate but his support is limited to the MAGA base.
Prediction: If DJT ends up the Republican candidate (big "if"), he will lose the general election in one of the largest landslides in history. And of course, he will claim that the election was rigged - that is the only way he can save face!
The circus that DJT has put us in, and continues to do so every day, will come crashing down in spectacular fashion some day, and democracy will be saved! Damaged and tainted for sure, but at least democracy will still be alive.

I think everyone is missing the big picture here. Y’see, Israel was courting Saudi Arabia with an economic cooperation deal. This would have created an economic alliance between Egypt, Qatar, UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Look who is left out of this deal…Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s cuz those countries support the terrorist groups like the Taliban, Al Queda, Hamas, Hezbollah and ISIS.
Those terrorist operations' mission statements are to destabilize the more rational governments and wipe Israel off the map. It’s in their collective doctrine to destroy Israel and anyone who supports them.
An alliance between the Saudis and Israel is viewed as an assault on Islam. Blasphemy, I tell ya. Although Quran scholars and Biblical scholars would disagree. They would say that this was a prophecy, Ya know, the Lion lays down with the Lamb kinda thing. The disagreement all these past 1000 years has been, who is the Lion and who is the Lamb?
So this here latest war between Hamas and Israel was Iran saying, let’s just blow up this whole deal with Saudi Arabia and those other blasphemous Islamic nations. Prevent it by any means necessary.
Hamas shocked the world with a brazen assault on Israel. Israel responded in a way that predictably raised support for Palestine. Protestors around the world demonstrate against Israel and call them occupiers and colonialists who run an apartheid state.
The Saudi deal with Israel is on hold. Palestinian citizens in Gaza are ordered by Hamas to stay and defy evacuation orders. Without Palestinian citizen casualties, Iran’s plan won’t work, and Hamas will be destroyed if those pussy terrorists had to actually stand and fight Israeli forces mano a mano.
So, Hamas uses the innocent Palestinian civilians remaining in Gaza as human shields. The world is outraged as Israelis move in. Hezbollah in Lebanon attacks from the north. Syria will join in next. Iran will start a proxy war with all the terrorist cells unleashed in the next few weeks.
The Ayatollah doesn’t give a shit about Palestinian lives. He’s happy creating chaos and mayhem and enforcing the ideology that keeps him in power.

I agree with GBD that "The Haj" by Leon Uris will give you insight into the Middle East as long as you don't assume it is 100% historically factual. I think Uris tried to be accurate but a couple of facts put out by Israel turned out to be not so accurate. Whether he knew those facts were in error at the time he wrote the book is anyone's guess.
I think Shadows post on the history is pretty accurate and Redfish's analysis of the thinking by Hamas and Iran is probably very correct.

I concur. After watching and reading several stories of this, here is what I conclude (and I am no political scholar). How the Hammas attacked, when they attacked, and who (festival goers, Kibbutz dwellers) is clearly a political move meant to get a specific reaction (which it achieved). Meaning they know Israel will protect and come for it's people. They did NOT attack military bases, or weapon stockpiles. They came in and attacked the most peaceful of Israel's citizens and foreign visitors. This is NOT a military attack. It is a terrorist attack meant to draw a war.
I am not going down the path of who is the lion and who is the lamb. It does NOT matter in this case. War has rules. Terrorism does not. This is Terrorism.
