i do like the direction of nato now...germany starting to make some big investments and talks about china
so whatever it took to get them here...i'm good. the more they spend, maybe the less we have to...germany talked about that also

Trump was the only President that actually shamed them and I guess it worked.
All previous Presidents wanted our Nato allies to pay more, but they all smiled and said 'fuck you'.
Trump actually called them out constantly and made a big deal about it. He was an asshole but got several of them to pony up.

People don't give Trump enough credit for his accomplishments. Getting NATO allies to pony up their share was a big thing. All of the previous Presidents asked kindly and our allies basically said fuck off.
Trump said, pay up or maybe we will have to leave NATO and you all can figure it out. I am sure he was never really planning to leave, but it did shake the trees and got a number of nations off the dime.

That was the problem, even with trump, - They asked.
Instead, they should've just announced the U.S. was cutting it's nato contribution 25 - 33% over the next 4 years.
Then tell the nato nations they've got 1 year to figure it out before it starts.
See how easy that was.

Trump even questioned the need for NATO as it was a founded to stop the Soviet Union and communism. The Soviet Union ceased to exist decades ago. This raises the question would the war in the Ukraine have started if Trump were still President ?

Of all the half assed apologisms for the Trump cataclysm this one is the most annoying and ignorant. Trump had the geopolitical strategic thinking of a drunk chimpanzee playing Risk. Ask the generals who served under him.
As much as we all rejoiced when mighty Romania increased its NATO contribution to 2% GDP, the fact of the matter is the Pentagon spends on NATO what the Pentagon thinks is essential to NATO. And it does not consider European hardware and software as equal to American counterparts.
NATO is the most important alliance in history and President whiny bitch almost sank it over bean counting. We would all do well to remember the historical precedent of the Pelloponesian War in which the allies of Athens turned against her and sided with Sparta because of the formers fiduciary tyranny.
The strategic goal of diplomacy and alliance is peace, not money. King Orangutan never understood that. Ask the generals.

Problem with that is that an even bigger 'hard liner' will take their place.
They LOVE their power, privilege and influence and aren't going to give it up without a fight.
Too, we've already seen this when Gorbachev was the leader of the old ussr.
There was a coup by the hard liners. Yeltsin was installed. Then Yeltsin 'retires' and he puts in Putin.
It always goes from moderate ----> hard liner and it never goes the other way. Not in a totalitarian regime.
For it to go the other way you'd have to have a fundamental shift in the way those countries/governments think.
That's not going to happen any time soon.

Not sure if they have the ability to carry it out but I could see the ukraine having a hand in it. They definitely want to keep the war going and are getting a ton of $$$ with no strings attached as well as a ton of weapons ... for free.
