I think your current profile telling people to text and pm is still probably the simplest method.
Many cell carriers allow email to text… example:
Verizon, 10 digit phone number at vtext.com, like 9495551234@vtext.com
ATT, 10 digit number at txt.att.net, like 949555123@txt.att.net
Once you’ve set your profile here to send you notifications to your email address, you can set up a forwarding rule in your email to forward to the text address. Gmail and Yahoo is pretty easy to do this. It will also do this to every email, so if you use an email for multiple purposes, it may generate a lot of text traffic.
Email to text will only send a certain number of characters… so it will chop a message at some fixed point and leave some parts off, but it will notify you to go look at the message and let you know you have one.
Because of this behavior of not getting a full message in the text, I wouldn’t recommend replacing the email address on your profile with the text email address.
If you need more help, pm me.

In Gmail, set a forwarding and filter rule to send messages to your cell phone via text.
A little tricky, but works beautifully
