I seriously doubt your going to see a photonic chip doing the work of a 5G smartphone with full MODEM, Graphics, Camera, and CPU on a silicon die the size of your thumbnail anytime soon... if ever.
Although very interesting they might produce a 'normal sized chip' that only does very basic functions and the endeavor is a breakthrough in the area of low energy compute and not high bandwidth compute.

The issue is still mass production with good efficiency for China. TSMC rules the world in production because of its efficiency. Less than 1% in defects. Its almost unheard of. IC designs will come for China. Its not difficult, it just takes a shit ton of money, commitment and time which China has.
China's 7nm has 30% deficiency rate. But considering its only starting, its still VERY good without EUV.
If money isn't a concern and everything is locally sourced, a 30% attrition rate is highly acceptable for now. That rate will continue to decrease as they get comfortable in QC and mass production.
Actually China already has 2nm design and production but in extremely small quantity reserved for its military and space use. Their problem isn't about design, its about mass production in high rate. The lack of skilled engineers in mass to work on these. But time will solve all these.
Our problem is we lose trillions in sales for the next 5 years. TRILLIONS. I will say with responsibility that ALL of our top tech firms that produce in this sector will ALL have mass firing this year and before end of next year. Intel is laying off 4000. AMAT is next. MSFT follows. AMD and NVDA next quarter. Cadence is rumored to decrease its R&D due to lack of sales. I personally know folks, high ranking folks in those companies looking for alternatives. A few are even giving up US citizenship to work for China. The worst thing is China is cleaning house as well, they are proactively purging non-committal US workers in China. Either give up US Citizenship or leave China. Guess what more than a 1000 scientists and engineers stayed in China and gave up US citizenship. And they are getting Japanese and European scientist and engineers as well. This is going to hit us hard, the dilution of talents from US.

And stupid Bidumb pissed off the Saudi, they stopped buying Boeing. MBS just bought 1.2 billion in planes from Airbus instead of BA. That's 40 planes BA just lost in sales.
I have said this over and over, without subsidizing by our gov't, BA is done. Who are we to sanction others over state enterprise when we have been doing the same thing in tech and agriculture.

Big difference there. They didn't have the refining tech. And when their leaders said go fucking make the BEST quality ball point of the ballpoint pen. Their state enterprise went ahead and spent the time and money and innovated their own. Now, the BEST in the world. Better than Japan and Germany. Took them 5 years.
This is what I'm talking about. They don't talk, they act. And when they made a decision, they spent the time, effect, energy, determination and most importantly, the money with talent to achieve their target and goal.
Ball point isn't a priority to them since other companies have the tech and China simply manufactured them. 38 billion dollars worth each year. They never cared much like semi-conductors. Since they can purchase, they didn't INVEST in the tech to build their own.
Don't confuse the point here. China didn't care to invest to make the ballpoint before their leader said they should. Then they did once the decision was made and put in action.
China also put a fucking human being in space. I don't see Japan and Germany or any western powers do that except for USA and Russia. So what they couldn't or didn't care for a ball point.
And this is the scary part. Now China wants to build its own IC designs, Fabs, machines and software on ALL semi-conductor related areas. Meaning, more than likely within the next 5 years, they will achieve ALL these goals. Because them Chinese are not just talkers, they put in the work, time, effect, discipline and fucking actions. History tells us that. All the success stories tell us that.
If you are so down on China, tell me why the United States of American are behind China in 5G, 6G, A.I, and Quantum Supremacy. We are the ones blacklisted China companies. They are not the ones blacklisting ours. You know why? Because they just don't fucking care. Not that they are behind. They will sell us shit if they can profit on it knowing that money will be used to further R&D on their own.

The US is *NOT* behind anybody on 5G and 6G development. In the list of suppliers in those markets there are many players actors, and real developers. At the top is the same US company that created it all.
