What do you want to do at the beach? Snorkel, sit there and people watch, surf, Boogie Board, be close to women for hire?

Your question is like asking what is the best car - depends on what you plan on doing with it.

^^^ Surfmonger is 100% correct ...

Here are a few great beaches ...

Oahu :

Sunset Beach on the North Shore --- No waves in the Summer, huge waves in the winter ...

Sandy Beach

Lanikai Beach

Ewa Beach is a quiet and chill beach ...

Waianae and Makaha are great beaches too, but you probably want to have a local with you ...

Maui :

Kamaole

Maluaka

Makena

All solid beaches down by Wailea ...

Kaanapali is cool, but primarily a tourist beach ...

Kauai :

It's been too long since I've been on Kauai, but Poipu Beach was always in our plans, and honestly, Kauai is so beautiful that I don't think that you could go wrong anywhere on Kauai

Kauai's Poipu beach is great for body surfing and relaxing, with a mild, small but useful wave set.

Makapuu on Oahu is terrific, with bigger waves, for body surfing if you're an excellent swimmer. Churchill short fins are highly recommended for Makapuu body-surfing. This is a beach with powerful wave action. Many is the tourist who were tumbled upside down while body-surfing those 10 footers at Makapuu. I LOVED it, but I'm at home in the ocean to a remarkable extent.

North shore Oahu is a lotta fun with summertime waves that are body-surfable; in winter the huge waves are not for body surfing, unless you're an olympic-class waterman.

What to keep in mind is whether the beach you consider is facing the waves and weather (east side of an island) or in the lee of (downwind of) the waves and wind crashing against the coast of Hawaii. The lee side, like Kaanapali on Maui or Waikiki on Oahu is mild, small but delightful, sheltered by the island itself. Whereas the windward sides of the islands, which face the tradewind-powered waves and wind, will be larger and more exciting.

Be aware of your ocean skills and physical conditioning. Even this guy, an ex-swim team in high school and an experienced body surfer and comfortable in the ocean waves and totally fit in my twenties, got tossed around, turned upside down, tumbled and battered, while body-surfing Makapuu. Exciting, for sure. Until I swam hard for the surface and my head hit the sand, so disorienting was the wave battering at Makapuu. No big. I turned around and churned for the surface while I still had air in my lungs.

Have fun, wherever you choose.

some great beaches

kauai secret beach/kauapea

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1RdCWQQlok

can be a little harrowing getting down to the beach, but funny watching lil ones fly down without a fear in the world

each of the homes on the cliff has its own trail down. great place to STAY with friends/family

big island - green sand beach/papakolea

seemed to always be on the itinerary each year. a bigger type of HIKE...maybe do it once if a FIT person...pay people to drive you out or have the 4wheel drive/rented you can take.

@ Loki51

Growing up in HB and Surfing almost daily, I probably swallowed gallons of saltwater in my youth ...

The bigger the waves, the more that I wanted to be out there, and the more wipeouts I had on big waves complete with total somersaults underwater from the incredible underwater turbulence --- just chewed me up and spit me out like I wasn't anything to it... I thank God that Mom got us all into swim lessons at age 5 and we all became great swimmers, cause the ocean is unrelenting violence to those who are not equipped with the skills to handle Mother Nature Oceana

If you're going to Kauapea, might as well pop in to Kilauea Fish Market for grinds.

Wailapa past Na Aina Kai, follow the dirt road down to Kahili, couple good breaks there.
Hanalei "the bowl" or flat rock will eat you on a big day, don't get caught inside
Panini for snorkeling
Hideaways below Pu'u Poa, crazy down a cliff location
Too many others to list but be aware, this is open water swell and can get big without warning
Some turistas die cause they don't respect

The Hilton Waikaloa has a fake man-made lagoon where you can pay to swim with dolphins and sea turtles.

The Mauna Kea Resort has a nice flat bay for old people to wade in.

You mainlanders talking about “secret” beaches are the reason you’re looked down on.
If a native Hawaiian or friend of a Hawaiian takes you to a “secret” beach, keep your mouth shut!!!
Just keep your pasty white asses home

Kauai is nice and quiet. It's also very small. You can tour that island 6 hours or less.

If you can, visit the beach on the military base. Almost no one around.
