Surf Monger is right. The planet will survive, but humans may or may not. If we go, we will certainly take some species with us. The northern right whale comes immediately to mind. But planet earth will make new species, even when we’re gone. It has for hundreds of millions of years.
So all of this talk about saving the planet is bullshit. It’s about saving ourselves.

There is a finite number of people that this planet can host. Some people think that that number is a fraction of the current world population. If entire population of the earth - right now - used natural resources and created trash and waste at the rate that affluent countries do currently, humanity would be fucked.
The population is growing exponentially. (It's almost impossible to get people, especially uneducated people, to stop creating humans).
Global warming will be just one of our existential problems within the next 50 to 100 years.

Throughout history there have been climate swings far greater than any we have experienced since the beginning of the industrial revolution... ice core samples prove it... but like the grifters on the climate change dole are only providing you with the data THEY think is relevant.
Whether or not there is climate change it behoves us to develop alternative sources of energy ... but we will never get to where we need to be because of the myriad of special interests pushing their side to the exclusion of any other alternative. It's a circular firing squad ready to pounce on any sector getting any good publicity all because they don't want anything being the center of attention other than themselves.
All of the above is my vote ... but you can't control a population if you do that.... and we all know now that is what it's all about.... controlling you.

There's a reason why we don't over-engineer things...........cost and diminishing utility
It was once estimated that the EPA required soil clean-up to the point that a small clone could eat the dirt for 50 years and not get sick...........
We could spend a trillion dollars and build a bridge out of titanium steel that would last a thousand years but what's the point?
NO, it's not smart to just spend all you got to reach some esoteric level in anything we do.

The EPA's job is to regulate and they will do so to the point of NO return
The lives saved is all just a computer simulation estimate with very little basis in the real world, just like the estimates of global temperature from climate change.........the worse they make it sound, the more power they get and that's really the point as far as any regulator is concerned.
Poster child for this is Gary Gensler at the SEC, guy is a pencil neck geek with no sense of proportion.
