Yes, penalize the oil companies. They will look at their P&L. Realize their profits have dwindled.
Add the amount penalized to the price of a gallon of gas.

We all pay for the stupid ass penalty the government imposed.

Please all of you idiot politicians and people. Corporations pass along ALL of their costs to their customers and consumers. Penalties, increased corporate taxes, government fees, etc. So every time one of our shit head politicians says they are going to 'get those corporations', bend over and get ready to get fucked.

@jazz51

Oil companies in California have reported record profits, as much as 1,700% above the same time period last year.

Maybe understand what’s going on before repeating the stale excuse for corporate greed.

Maybe understand what’s going on before repeating the stale excuse for corporate greed.

Back in 2011 and 2012, the oil and gas industry as a whole saw 2.69 and 2.62 trillion in profits.

That dropped down to 0.79 trillion in 2016, and 0.87 in 2020. So current is a recovery and getting back closer to those profits back in 2011 and 2012.

People need to be very careful with numbers. If you made $1 in profit one year and $3 in profit the next, that would be a 200% increase, but you would still only make an increase of $2.....

Joe's job numbers he quotes are like that.

You have thousands of jobs depart due to Covid, and then those same jobs come back, he takes credit for new job growth.

Excellent retort.

From what I wrote, it is clear to you that I want higher gas prices? When Newsom imposes sanctions on oil companies, it isn't meant to punish them but to encourage them to screw consumers even more.

And when Trump calls for the termination of the Constitution, he's simply being a patriot...like those who attacked the Capitol on January 6.

I am starting to understand you guys now....

2020 was a bad year for oil companies because of the pandemic
2021 was a great year for oil companies as they recovered from the lull created by the pandemic.

We are comparing the same time period between 2021 and 2022.

Do you not see how what you wrote doesn't make any sense?

If a company made $1 billion in profit (that's after expenses, of course) in the Q2 of 2021, and now it's making $4 billion in profit, that's a 400% increase. A 1,700% increase would be $17 billion in NET PROFIT.

That's after all expenses are deducted from total revenue.

Now, if the government taxes or penalizes a company or industry with stable income/prices, raising only their expenses, then of course the added taxes/penalties would be passed onto consumers. That is not the case here. What we are talking about is an essential item for our economy, controlled by a handful of companies in a government-sanctioned oligopoly (they are allowed to exist because of the high cost to drill), where their greed (unreasonable profits) can and should be controlled by the government.

It is precisely because of Government and their regulations and recent stand of anti-fossil fuel that has us in this position. Only when Sleepy Joe fucked things up did we see the rise in gas prices. Like I said, if you knew your business was being slowly shut down by government, I bet you would squeeze every dime out of it before your demise. That is what Joey and the Green New Deal idiots have done. Put a gun to their head, and they get the maximum profits until it is gone forever.

If you don't penalize the oil companies in essence you aren't doing anything. Oil companies will continue to raise the price of gas anyway. No matter what is done, the greedy bastards will continue to take.
By taxing the oil companies, you have a forced revenue to implement more public transportation. Possibly free RTA and Metro. A bill to tax the public for a project such as this won't pass. So, we as consumers have to foot the cost anyway. Best way to get funded is charged the oil companies, in turn price of gas goes up, big oil doesn't lose a penny, government get the cash. Pyramid.
Let gas go up all they want. Eventually you folks will learn to ride or walk to work. Ride the Metro.
Ride share, buy more fuel efficient cars, stop buying ridiculass 4x4 trucks that never see a dirt road.
I guaranty you if public transportation was free i'd see your ass taking it.

@ma ... I wont address Jan 6 cus I don't agree with the violence that some of those those people partook in, i also avoid places where mischief is apt to occur and some of the people caught up in that mess should have thought the same... I won't address what Trump said cus ... it was stupid. No matter how he meant it (how can it be interpreted in any way other than) it was stupid.

What if anything has been done by the Federal or State governments that should result in a cost reduction at the pump at the pump (other than draining our oil reserves). Absolutely nothing. I Can think of several things that has caused the prices to go up but I've already stated them before ...you know em and as I said back in those other threads.... you just don't care.

You can’t get anywhere on the Metro unless you are willing to spend 4 hours getting there and 4 hours coming back. Public transportation only works when there are hubs of employment….not really the case in Southern Californiaz

Bingo!!! That's what you want.... sounds great if my commute wasn't 25 miles and takes over 2 fucking hours if I took public transportation even with close proximity to
MTS rail services. That's the life you want us to live ... fuck that.

Do any of you idiots know how to read? The penalties for charging above the cap are refunded to California taxpayers. It would be pointless for corporations to charge above the cap just to give that money to the government.
This is a win win for consumers by any standard.

Thank you for the first half of what you wrote. At least we agree on some things.

Concerning the passage I quoted above, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but gas prices are dropping quickly. Maybe the fact that Biden and Newsom have been threatening disgorging oil company profits has forced them to lower their prices. Maybe it’s tapping into our oil reserves. Maybe it’s allowing oil companies to pump in Venezuela. Or it’s a combination of factors. Regardless, prices are dropping and the federal and state governments were heavily involved.

It used to cost $20,000 to ship one container from China to LA. Now it’s around $1,990….a 90% drop, which will reduce prices for goods across the board (when prices of Chinese goods drop, the prices of goods made everywhere drop to compete).

All of this is affecting inflation, which is dropping now faster than expected.

Biden is far from perfect, but he’s been a more effective President than most are willing to admit, especially in his ability to pass legislation with the slimmest of margins.

Again, I don’t want him to run again because of his age, but he is certainly a much better option than the dumpster fire clown show we had before.

This isn't about who is running for Pres... that's a bit down the road .... its about oil.... I've read where Trumps policies were bad for Oil companies but the obvious result was good for the consumer. .... im not so native that just because we got something cheap it was good all around for everyone involved....you know what didn't budge in all that whether good or bad .... the cut the government gets state and fed gets theirs mf'r and fuck off if you bitch about it.

Obviously there's a happy medium but your guy is actually traveling the world hat in hand begging for someone to throw him a bone .... totally unnecessary. There is NO GOOD REASON not to drill here in the US and no good reason for him to do anything that discourages it other than he has to curry favor from the people who got him their .... just like the credit card companies and China .... eventually Joe has to pay the piper and he is more than willing to do so... but he is doing it at our expense not his own.

Standard Oil was broken up in 1911 under antitrust laws because it was a monopoly. So I don’t know what you’re talking about. Technically, it didn’t go well for Rockefeller.

Our big oil companies can also be broken up to promote more competitive pricing. That is the risk they take by artificially inflating oil prices.

Google and Facebook may also be broken up for the same reason.

@MA1 Google and Facebook need to be broken up because they want to control information.
They don't want freedom of speech. They want to tell you what to believe.
And there is evidence that they are acting on behalf of the Democratic Party.
I've never heard of anyone complaining about the cost of using Google or Facebook.

Amazing, Biden becomes POTUS and all hell breaks loose but people like MA1
says, he doing a good job. Isn't it amazing what a senile president can do. AWESOME!
We need more illegals, higher energy costs, more inflation,
more crime and more wars. This is good for all Americans.
With Biden in office for the next 2 years, more misery to come.
MA1 seems oblivious to this and well as other citizens.

For once, Ill agree with Mildly Amusing.

If it's a good thing for the Oil Companies to be broken up due to price collusion & gouging.....

then it's only logical to break up the largest monopoly and price gouger there is - Government.

Break Fed into different autonomous units, like Standard oil into smaller competitive pieces.

Break California Government into smaller competing pieces.

After all, Government makes more in taxes per gallon of gas that the oil companies make in profit.

That’s a 1700% increase from when they were almost going bankrupt from stupid lockdowns extended by the dumbass in Sacramento. If you tax them to take away their profits to makeup that loss, they will do one of two things: Raise prices significantly or shutdown production and leave you with a permanent shortage.
