Jimi Hendrix said Beck was the best guitar player ever.
|
|
Perhaps Jimmy said that, he also said other Guitarists were the best.
|
|
Jimmy Page, bandmates from the Yardbirds said this about Jeff Beck...
"Everybody respects Jeff,” Page said. “He’s an extraordinary musician and he’s developed a technique which is so complex, it’s just a beauty to behold and hear and to feel his playing. He’s having a conversation with you when he’s playing. It’s just he’s not singing.
RIP Maestro

Best guitarist for his time. The 60s. What did any of these old men think of Randy Rhodes.
|
|
Rhodes ? good but not even at the same level as Beck.

Beck era style guitar playing is obviously different. I think his name was Earl Scrubbs, said to be the greatest. I admit, he was awesome.
But rock n roll, 60s to say late 70s was more like playskool cords. When you get a guy that moves his fingers faster than greases lightning, it leaves you awestruck.
Randy Rhodes, Vivian Cambel, Slash made that electrified cat gut scream.
Now you have guys like Tom Morela from Rage producing a much different sound, in a word Amazing. I think Beck Bogart and Appice was the best combo out of that group.

PS. Not the same level. You're right. It has leveled up.

Thanks for all your comments, and vids about Beck I've never seen.
I'm an electric blues aficionado and was touched instantly when I saw the headline yesterday.
I last enjoyed Jeff Beck at Crossroads 2 in suburban Chicago in 2007 or 8 when female Australian bass player Tal Wilkenfield kinda stole the show from him (if that's possible?).
A light reading of an early obit reminded me of his 1974 mega vinyl creation "Blow by Blow". I ve listened to it and enjoyed it hundreds of times.
It is sublime and astonishing how the creation of an individual musician can transform and engage us. Truely moving.
On another note I'm quite surprised that bacterial meningitis can kill a person in 2023. Sure age 78, decreased immune system, but I assume he had access to excellent medical care. If it is even in the differential diagnosis you treat with antibiotics that get into the CNS because its curable and the consequences are lethal.
Thank you Jeff, and we will continue to enjoy your beautiful music while we are here.

"Jeff Beck's 10 Essential Songs" This article from the Times today made my morning. I've only listened to 2 songs so far: my productivity is down but my happiness is way up now.
Towards the bottom listen to "Beck's Bolero" done at his Rock N Roll Hall of Fame initiation. His duet with Jimmy Page is choice.
Enjoy!

I started listening to beck when my guitar player friend told me to check out blow by blow,
Wired, beck-ola, Beck,Bogert, Appice. All in one day.. at 14 we fucking studied that shit. Learned to
play that shit. For fucking hours and HOURS.. After awhile i was begging to play some zeppelin.
Which ironically was stairway... my appreciation for beck burnt out a long time ago.
But, i did realize he was doing his own thing, and will always do his own thing. He IS jeff beck,
no one will ever fill his shoes. His playing technique. his intonation. THAT is jeff beck.
He fucking did it HIS way... RIP.
