Had my first meeting this morning with a survivor from Turkey, who was there.
He was a whirlwind of emotion.
Happy he was alive and healthy, happy his friends and family were good but damn, that haunted look.
Never seen a person go pale white talking about a memory.
Talk about survivor shock.
Like grasping for straws in your center and things slip in his heart.
You could see it and hear it in the voice.

Would a 7.8 knock down as many buildings here. Or will the retro and codes keep them up?
|
|
In the region, a significant number of dwellings are constructed of concrete block, brick, and related materials without any metal anchors, tie-ins, and other techniques to reduce shear and other destructive earthquake-related forces on a structure.
It's tragic, and it will recur every few years or decades. Poor people cannot afford to earthquake retrofit even if the building codes would be modernized, as ours have here in SoCal.
The January 17, 1994 Northridge earthquake was a 6.7 on the "sphincter scale" (Richter scale). It was highly destructive and there were deaths, freeway overpasses collapsed, ruptured gas mains spouting pillars of fire 30 feet high and other traumas.
This recent Turkey/Syria earthquake was said to be a 7.8. Having lived through the Northridge quake at pretty near ground zero, I cannot even imagine what a 7.8 must be like.

we have fires, quakes and gays here in calif.
they have just super high inflating and quakes that are lil bigger
|
|
According to the USGS, a 7.8 earthquake is 12.6 times bigger than a 6.7 earthquake but it is 44.7 times stronger when talking about the amount of energy released (the destructive force).

Turkey - are they considered poor?
they are part of NATO and halfway EU.
Not considered third-world..
|
|
they were pretty instrumental in this russian war...without them, it'd be a lot tougher or over?

Yup

How to donate to relief efforts…
(I chose UNICEF)

I believe the Turks committed massive genocide on Armenian people. Maybe this a curse or payback for what happened.
|
|
I'll never bitch about the building codes in CA.
