Randy Rhoades or Eddie Van Halen
Neil Peart or Dave Grohl
Mark Knopfler .... Hope I spelled that right
Knoffler technique is interesting. Finger picking with only his thumb and two fingers. His pinkie and ring finger never utilized
GREATEST GUITARISTS:
Jimi Hendrix
Frank Zappa
Dweezil Zappa
Steve Vai
Duane Alman
David Gilmour from Pink Floyd
GREATEST DRUMMERS:
Keith Moon (The Who)
Carl Palmer (Emerson Lake and Palmer)
Ginger Baker
Buddy Rich
Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones)
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Not in any particular order, except Keith Moon and Ginger Baker were the most influential rock and blues drummers.
Hendrix and both Zappas changed how rock bands performed in the studio and on stage.
Anyone who mentions Keith Richards as a great guitarist should probably eat soap for dinner. He was never the best guitarist even in his own band.
Stop it with Keith Moon. That dude couldn't keep a beat the rest of the band looked to John Antwhistle so they could play a song. Bonzo and Peart, then everyone else.
Jimmy Page probably has the most number of recognizable and frequently re-used guitar riffs of all. I like his acoustic work as well.
Bonham was a steady drummer and a master of triplets and the swing grove. He made Zeppelin a force.
Keith Moon had his place with a wild randomness in his grove. Like he's always peaking and can't level off with the energy.
Keith Richards is the best impersonator of a dead musician. Nobody listens to the Stones and says "That fucking guitar lick is Awesome!"

Only alphabetical order
Beck
Clapton
Hendrix
Page
A mention
Santana
Drummers
Bonham
Then everybody else

Zappa pokes fun at Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven
Anyone claiming Led Zeppelin was the be all/show all/play all rock band should listen to this mash up.
Yea, they were talented. But Zep was the most notorious rip-off band of all times.
A Whole Lot of Helter Skelter – Beatles vs Zeppelin
+ 1 on Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray and a personal favorite Edge “David Evan’s” of U2.
Scott Gorham from Glendale.
Ringo Starr
That guy could really rip it
I got a go with Eddy Van Halen. Although I love Daivd Gilmour.
Hands down Neil Pert.

No one else comes close.

When asked how it felt to be the "best guitar player in the world", Eric Clapton answered "I don't know, you will have to ask Prince".
Prince in this rocks
Acoustic category:
Tommy Emmanuel
Billy Strings
Reddish
Carl Palmer.....great call. Most would not go there. You know your drummers. He was also with Asia.
Metallica said it best I'm here 2 see Rage
I was always partial to Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Pity, he died so early, he could have conceivable been even better than he was.
Some great names listed here though. (oh, and although not my "thing", Prince by many was recognized as an all around great across instruments)
Stevie Ray Vaughn, when he was on, that man could make a guitar cry or gush.
that clapton comment is a take off on the rumored question asked to Hendrix, which he supposedly replied , ask rory gaalagher. none of these have ever been verified

Who would forget to mention
Allan Holdsworth
Tony Iommi
Angus Young
Ritchie Blackmore (every guitar player in the world tried to butcher smoke on the water at least once in their lives)
Chuck Berry
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jeff Beck
Eric Johnson
Jason Becker (ALS cut his career short but nonetheless a virtuoso)
Albert King!!
He wouldn't be considered a rock and roll guitarist, but he has influenced many of them.
Too hard to put in any particular order.
Guitars:
Eddie Van Halen
Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Eric Clapton
Mark Knopfler
BB King
Drums:
Buddy Rich
Neil Peart
John Bonham
Carl Palmer
Keith Moon
Simon Phillips
Stewart Copeland
Alex Van Halen

Can’t argue with any of the selections. But I gotta give my Gen X musicians some love
Guitar:
John Mayer. Super underrated as a musician.
Jerry Cantrell: Alice In Chains is legendary.
Drums: Jimmy Chamberlain. To me, the heart and soul of that early Smashing Pumpkins sound.
You will find Terry Klath from Chicago on a lot of musicians list.
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
I'm a little surprised no one said Santana
^ Sorry, not a drummer
Actually I did type Santana. Carlos is the journeyman guitar player with the abilities to play about anything.
as a drummer, when buddy rich played, we all sat at the foot of the stage in awe of this man’s talent
not a rock drummer, but probably the finest and fastest jazz drummer ever
and surprisingly a nice guy, not some arrogant prima donna
Clapton would never have said that about Prince, who was all show and no go.
be honest
i know it's not on these lists, but pretty sure LED all your AIR GUITAR sessions back in the day, by a wide margin
don't fucking lie either
watched a lot of stuff on ringo a while back...dude was an amazing drummer
A jazz drummer that was an influence on a number of drummers was Gene Krupa.
^^^^ great choice,
Don't forget Ian Paice and Bill Ward. Some of my favorites.
Honorable guiterist Neil Young both acoustic and electric
Now that Neil Peart is gone, the greatest living drummer is Danny Carey, hands down. And not only is he still alive, he's still relevant, innovative, and most of all, damn fun to watch.
For drummers, one name I haven't seen in this thread that belongs in the conversation is Stevie Wonder. In 1974 Eric Clapton reportedly said he was the best drummer of their generation.
As to guitarists, a name not mentioned above that should be is Andy Summers from The Police.
Anyone claiming Dave Grohl is one of the best drummers of all time needs to pay more attention. He freely admits he stole the Smells Like Teen Spirit opening from the Gap Band's Burn Rubber and I think he has stated both Prince and Taylor Hawkins were better drummers.
Zappa.
And +1 on Gene Krupa as the grandfather of rock drumming.
If we are talking about jazz influencers, but restricting to the instrument of guitar, go check out Charlie Christian. As far as I know, the first to popularize a guitar solo in a big band. Died too young at 25, so it's amazing the influence he left at such a young age.
