Will California's new tax on gun and ammunition sales reduce firearm violence?
Jun 16 2024 12:40PM more by lamar
Tags: Random

California will be the first U.S. state to charge an excise tax on guns and ammunition, starting in July. The new tax- an 11% levy on each sale-will come on top of federal excise taxes of 10% or 11% for firearms and California's 6% sales tax.

The National Rifle Assn. has characterized the law that allows this new tax, the Gun Violence Prevention, as an affront to the Constitution. But the reaction from the gun lobby and firearms manufacturers may hint at something else: the effect that the measure, which is aimed at reducing gun violence, may have on sales.

The new tax will make me feel safer, because there should be no more gun violence in California.

No, Not In The Least.

It's a money grab to help make up for the 24-to-48-billion-dollar deficit.

Right along with the Road Tax, around 6 cents a mile.

I don't think adding tax will stop gun violence as all they'll do is just pay the money

Plus most criminals dont get their firearms legally so it really hurts everyone else

it could potentially help drag black market prices up, which would make it more difficult to have access to them

if your argument is well, you can just go somewhere, buy it, and then come back. yes that is true, but from a black market standpoint, you are paying a premium for the transportation and what not now

so it could potentially lower crime or at least get some of the guns off the streets

in my personal opinion, the tax is too low to properly make a dent

Increase in taxes will only benefit the state not the people. There is no added safety due to increased cost. Only makes legal gun ownership more expensive and does nothing for the criminal use of firearms.

News flash, California is bankrupt, and the State wants more taxes. Nothing to see here folks.

@OP Is this a sarcastic post? Canā€™t tell these days.

Evil has already been let out of the box. Tax on guns and ammo is the same as gas tax and climate tax. COMPLETE BS! There are so many guns and ammo out there. Also, this wonā€™t stop anyone from committing crimes.

This tax is classist. Itā€™ll keep poor people from being able to exercise their rights.

The only way the increased tax might benefit would be putting more cops on the streets. Since that will not be the case, it won't help a thing except pad the pockets of government. It won't do anything but take more money out of the hands that are generally law abiding citizens.

For the person who chooses to take a life by using a gun, does anyone really think that adding a tax will be the deciding factor that stops them? For those that think it will. You may be a bigger problem for the country than the insane shooter.

Seams some are sick of the complaints, but yet they whine about a political blog in the wrong category. Don't fucking view the blog. Certainly don't write two paragraphs explaining your complaints.

I really don't believe that ANYONE thinks thinks that this will result in less gun crime. The people sponsoring and voting for this bill simply want to produce the "appearance" that they are trying to be tough on gun ownership. Typical political gamesmanship/bullshit.

The beautiful and exquisite reality of math is that it never lies. The tragic and bestial reality of uneducated destructionists is that lying is the only thing they seem to know how to do. If you think you are smarter than math then you are probably a greater danger to the country and to human progress than even guns are.

Gestapo restrictions on speed limits, Gestapo taxes on tobacco and alcohol, Gestapo laws on seat belts, Gestapo bans on DDT and asbestos have mathematically and demonstrably saved lives and tax payer dollars. As far as I know no Jews were harmed during the passage of these democratic statutes.

Gun violence is no more awkward a phrase than breast cancer. Why are all these breasts going around causing cancer? Because anyone with a functioning brain stem automatically understands that gun and breast are metonyms representing multiple nouns. When a reporter says the White House said today she means the Executive Branch. She does not mean a building supernaturally spoke.

And horneyfailure. If you want to play make believe that you are a real boy with sentient thoughts? Then learn how to spell the most basic English words.

It's a regressive tax.

It hurts minorities more than the average white guy.
The black & brown that are simply wanting to protect their families in the largely more violent places that they live simply harms them more.

I can afford to pay the increased tax, but I will not buy Ammo in this state.

I have plenty on hand, perhaps too much (anyone want to buy some at inflated prices?)

Even if I didn't, I go to other states frequently enough, I'll just buy there and CA won't get my sales tax, and won't register my name as buying ammo.

If you are caught bringing ammunition you purchased out of state into California without shipping it to a licensed vendor and submitting to a background check, you can be prosecuted. A violation can be an infraction or a misdemeanor.

So is bringing in (or shipping) "normal" magazines.

But good point, make otherwise law abiding citizens break laws in order to protect themselves.
