Very sorry to hear about your puppy. Pre Rona, my dog (passed a few years ago) had ACL on both back legs one after the other about a year apart. If I recall correct, was almost 5K each operation - sucks. Place was in OC. Sorry I can't recommend any where for you. Wishing you and the pup all the best.

Have you looked at Affordable Animal Hospital in Orange? I did hear good things but have not been there myself. I have been to Healing Hearts in Laguna Hills but not sure if they are affordable.
Do you have insurance? I have Healthy Paws, it has a 15 day grace period to start but coverage is really pretty good for like $50 a month.
Do not under any circumstances go to the Mission Viejo Emergency Vet, they don't give a fuck and will upsell you while you are standing there in tears trying to make tough decisions.

I swear all these dogs are tearing their ACL. My dog tore his 4 weeks ago. And my two neighbors dog tore theirs too abot two months ago. I think these dog vaccines or food is deteriorating our animals.
Jazz, don’t let them scare you into an operation so fast. Take your time and make sure your pup is comfortable. I have Insurance on my dog, but he’s 10 years old, so I am considering life without surgery.
Also, a surgeon should have gave you finance options, and please consider a second opinion.
|
|
4k ? Thee specialty group quoted me 9k. I think because they know he has Insurance (thieves)
Also, your vet should be referring you to all these places so you don’t have too.
|
|
Also, if your dog runs out of medication, Chewy dot com has it for a little cheaper because they offer generic.

I did call affordable animal in orange they gave a 4k price as well. So much for being affordable
The vet I went to told me about care credit to apply to. I also noticed the places that have to call a surgeon in are more expensive. So I'm trying to find places that just do surgeries.
Most surgery places want a consultation first before even giving a estimate smh. Im not paying a consultation and you tell me 5k. It's so frustrating!!
I'm not in a rush but in a rush. It's been a week already, I thought it was a sprain or something till I heard popping in her knee last night so I went today.
I'm gonna call more tomorrow and maybe find some non profit place that can give more info.
Thank you all for the info.

Hi Jazzy, My Boxer blew out her acl my vet did the surgery and within several weeks she was back to walking and gingerly running - gingerly because I wouldn't let her run around like before it happened..
My vet is located in Chino, off of Central Ave. between Walnut & Riverside Dr. On the west side of the street in El Central Real Plaza a small strip mall.
Chino Veterinary Hospital
(909) 628-5155
12578 Central Ave Chino, CA 91710
It happened quite a while ago, about 8 years ago and she's since passed.
But IIRC the cost was under $2000 at the time.
Doc's AWESOME and I highly recommend him! Give them a call and see what they have to say.
I hope this helps!!!

OP would you consider a go-fund-me page
|

If, for some reason, you can’t cover the cost yourself, there is a donation based angel fund that a friend of mine was referred to last year. She decided other people were more in need and passed on it, but I think they were going to cover about $1,500.
The vet can submit your case to them. $5k seems to be the going rate, her dog had the exact same thing. Make sure it is all inclusive though, including all follow-up, X-rays, and rehab needed.
Good luck.

Doggy surgery is hella expensive!

Look into Dr Butchko. They will definitely work with you.

I used Chino Veterinay Hospital a couple of times. They were reasonable in price and my pets ended up happy and healthy. Someone also mentioned to me that contacting Veterinay Schools might be an option if money is an issue. Hope you find a good option and that your pet ends up well taken care of. 😊

Here's a couple resources

^^^^ hey there you go ..
I'm so sorry your pup is feeling lousy with a hurt leg
You say you're researching it, that's all anyone can do these days.
There's gotta be something !?!?!?!!!!
I think Grace did a blog about that Care Credit cause they'll insure and pay right away as soon as you sign up, IDK if that's possible for you.
I recently did a blog in my pet club and got a lot of information regarding the pet insurance.
Good luck darlin

Western university of veterinary medicine in Pomona May have lower cost options

|
@Atticus_Finch how old was your dog and breed?
|
|
the former animal and bird hospital in Norco is a teaching hospital - they are part of the UCR vet school. you might want to give them a call. they have 4 different wings devoted to dogs, cats, farm animals and birds.

@Vince2001 Riz was a Boxer and she was about 5 or 6.
She used to run as fast as she could around the yard after a bath. She was doing that after a bath and made a quick tight turn and I could see she hurt her left hind leg. But it was Sunday so there was nothing I could do. Took Monday off, called them and told his wife, his receptionist, what had happened and she told me to bring her right in, she'd been his patient since I got her.

Groovie I don't think UCR has a vet school.
The only college of veterinary med is at UC Davis, go Aggies. At least in the UC system.
It's also considered one of the best in the country.

My dogs are my children, I recommend everyone who has a fur baby get insurance on them because when something horrible like this happens it costs more in the long run, I have met a few veterinary specialists on this sites I hope they pm you because I’m sure they will have the best recommendations. I’m sure if something happens to one of mine I would pay whatever it took to not see them in pain. I hope your baby is ok and you find the right doctor and something like this I would do the research on the doctor so everything turns out good in the long run.

Speaking of pain. They have CBD for pets too. Also, they have LIONS MANE and other mushroom extracts for dogs/cats with problems.

Contact a college or university that offers a degree in veterinarian care. They may do it for free. Granted, you have students doing the procedure to get experience but they have qualified teachers watching over their shoulder. Not the best option, but still an option if you can't afford anything else.

To Bassguy... My friend takes her bulldogs to have surgery at Dr. Butchko's practice, which I believe is in Riverside. I guess he's known for operating on bulldogs, tail amputations etc etc. He's a competent surgeon and everything worked out without any complications. He came highly recommended by a bulldog breeder who lives in Riverside. His staff on the other hand lack in professionalism and kindness, in other words rude and incompetent with absolutely no bedside manner if it were to jump up & bitch slap them in the face. Keep in mind this was about 2 1/2-3 years ago. He could have hired a whole new staff by now. I don't know if he's a low cost or affordable vet though. It's worth looking into.
To jazzy... Now as far as referrals go you may have heard of Family Animal Hospital in Costa Mesa, because they are well known for being one of the lowest cost vet clinics/hospitals in Orange County. Well truth be told and this is a perfect example of.... You get what you pay for! DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT under any circumstances whatsoever take your dog to this veterinarian!!! Please don't, no matter how affordable it may be. There's an 88,9% chance it will end in disaster, and the vets & vet techs will not accept responsibility or hold any sort of accountability for their colossal f%ups. I could give you several examples just off the top of my head, including what they've done to my dog, but I'm not going to get into that on HX. Plus no body wants to read a novel right now. AVOID this place like the bubonic plague!
In all reality there is no such thing as a low cost veterinarian or veterinary hospital or clinic... They simply do not exist. Not in the state of California anyway. They will advertise as such but all that means is that they charge slightly less than those vets who don't include the low cost terminology in their business model. Any typical OC vet will charge on average to repair a luxating patella starting on the low end, $1,800 depending on the size of the dog, severity and grade (1-4), 4 being the worst on upwards to $2,500. At the low cost clinic it will be maybe a $300 to $400 difference in cost. There is nothing low cost about having to cough up anywhere from $1,400 to $2,100 to have your 5 1/2 lb. chihuahua or Yorkshire terrier's knee cap put back in its right place.
I'm going to recommend to you AAA Animal Hospital, right next door to the OC Humane Society. 21632 Newland St. Huntington Beach, CA 92646 Ph. 714-536-6537 The veterinarians there have always been very kind, accommodating and often have a good sense of humor, which is refreshing especially when you're stressed out over your sick or injured pet. Every single staff member from the techs in the back to the front office staff have always been friendly and seem genuinely concerned for your pets. That's been my experience anyway, and I've been going to them off & on for 20 years. My best friend takes her dogs there as well. She's had surgeries done there & emergency visits and she has nothing negative to say either. My go to vet is Costa Mesa Animal Hospital. They are wonderful but a bit on the higher side cost wise, but I love the doctors there as they've helped me out on a couple occasions where I didn't have all the funds, yet they took care of my dog regardless, and it's convenient & close to home. Both are certainly worth looking into. I hope this helps you and your little one out. Sending good vibes your way for a successful & speedy recovery!

My 6 year old Chow Chow tore here acl last year. Did the x-rays and it didn't look bad but vet said yes torn and needs surgery. Quoted 4 to 6 K and she also gave me some Joint medicine for dogs.
She was limping a lot. But I didn't want to rush and schedule surgery.
Had her take it easy and no long walks and took her medicine for two months, It seems as it wasn't that bad as she is walking fine now, no limp at all, for the last two months. I think the Joint Medicine for dogs worked great!

I have used a low cost place near me for over 20 years. The downside is that they are very busy and you have to be persistent in getting to see them but the prices can not be beat and the doctors are excellent.
Blue Cross Animal Hospital(https://www.bxanimalhospital.com/)
10593 S Mills Ave, Montclair, CA 91763, USA
(909) 621-2988
They have appointment or walk-in hours. If you go for walk-in, arrive 30 minutes before walk-in hours start to get in line and you'll be seen that day. They fill up their walk in capacity most days.
Hope that helps.

I have friends that have gone to Tijuana for surgery and paid a small fraction of the cost they were quoted in the U.S.
The facilities were clean and had all the modern equipment you’d find in the U.S. they even used labs in the U.S. for their tests.
If cost is a serious obstacle, this could be a better option than letting the pup suffer or worse.

I highly recommend Ambassador Long Beach Veterinary Hospital
most reasonable cost i have found for my dogs.
|
|
You can apply for CareCredit card which can be used to help pay the vet bills. Obviously they would need to run your credit for this...
|

Dr. Butchko specializes in English Bulldogs. In fact that's all he does.
People from All parts of the world actually fly their bulldogs to Butchko for surgeries. I did work on his hospital and his son was the one who told me.

AF, i helped build some of the support equipt for that hospital, second floor observatory for students to watch surgeries on all kinds of animals. I will let you argue with the hospital. and i doubt that jazzy is traveling to Davis for surgery. But thanks ...

Try Grand Pet Care in Santa Ana, by far the most affordable, caring, cautious vet I’ve used for my frenchies. When one of them needed surgery they gave me a list of organizations that you could apply for donations to help pay for the cost, I’ve taken litters of pups and after initial visits they don’t nickel and dime you whenever they need something routine like shots, a flea pill, or refills on meds- no appointment needed you just call and let them know your coming and they handle it right away when you arrive. It’s always been affordable and if it’s something they couldn’t help me with I asked for a recommendation and so far haven’t been let down.
Wishing you the best of luck, the go fund me is a great idea, please let me know if you startt one I would be happy to donate!

This happened to my boy Yorkie about 10 or so years ago. I ended up taking him to affordable animal hospital in Carson. It was about 1200 at the time I think, but when he was out of surgery it was just an equivalent to an gauze wrap around his leg, nothing that really braced him, so he didn't heal properly and had a limp for the reminder of him life.
That being said just make sure they give him a real brace, splint or something sturdy. Wish you both the best outcome!!

Groovie, wasn't saying they didn't, was saying I didn't think they did.
When I was at Davis they were the only one in the west other than the one in Colorado, I think at the time there were only 15 or 16.
I remember asking a guy I knew that was in the program why there were so few he said he thought it was because it was so hard to get accepted in to vet programs, harder to get into then med school, so graduation classes were quite small.
At least it was in the late 90's early 2000's.
Is the UCR school accredited? When did they build it? Seems like it would have been in the last 5 - 10 years?
Makes sense since UCD's was always full and couldn't accommodate the demand. Knew a girl who'd applied to both Davis & Colorado - Davis had 4 spots open and 3000 applicants and Colorado had 6 spots w/ 4500 aps.
When I was going to Davis the dean of the vet school had a beef w/ the admin over the vet school's budget so he let the accreditation lapse. Problem for the admin is that the vet school is one of the big draws to Davis so after 6 months the admin gave in and the school was re-accredited.
Doc Hill went to Davis and has deep ties to the school and even took time off to teach a couple of classes there til they could find a permanent prof, Doc wasn't interested in research.

Sorry about your puppy, Dogs are our Fur Babies , I know its hard when they are not well,
Dr Buthchko is good and Reasonably priced but it still will be in the Thoudsands.
I Agree w Greym669
TJ or Mexicali is a great alternative. I take my dogs to a vet In Mexicali , He is great and it will be savings of over 70 to 80 Percent compared to US Prices. The only hassle is that you have to drive into Mexico, But IMHO Well worth it!
PS I Have a Boxer mix, Yorkie and Chihuahua and he takes care of all of them.

Sorry your fur baby is in pain but I have a few things you might think about, both my knees have torn acl’s one I had surgery on and tore it again, the other I tore but didn’t bother with the surgery since the repaired one tore again anyway, I tore them playing ice hockey in those beer leagues where these assholes love plowing into the goalie, but they can’t tell if an ACL is torn with just X-ray, only through a MRI can they tell that the ligament is torn, also it takes a lot of force to tear that ligament since the knee would have to hyperextend in the opposite direction, so for a little dog to tear there’s and a yorkie barely weighs 10lbs. is really head scratching. I can walk run fine with torn ACLs just can’t play anymore sports, after the swelling went away I just got on a stationary bike to keep the muscles around my knee strong and I have been doing this for 20 years now, so maybe like the other gent said, joint supplements, anti inflammatory meds, and shorter walks for a few weeks until she wants to run again, good luck
