Only four votes from Rs for border bill. Fuhrer's command to kill it was enough to change R's direction entirely. And Rs know that they will not get this kind of better deal EVER, and it was bi-partisan deal to begin with.

Trump didn't really do shit, slowed it a little with the Hold in Mexico thing and Biden has allowed it to become even worse but I've heard it two ways:
One, kill the bill so Trump's got a political cudgel against Biden (does he really need one given how bad the optics are for Joe already?)
Two, the bill gave too much leeway for Biden to do whatever, so it ended up giving him an election chit but wouldn't really make any difference at the border and we'd be in the same shit soup except for Joe could tout a win that wasn't really a win

And of course the Border Patrol supports the bill. Right now, they're still operating on 2023 CR money. AND they have to still pay the 5+% average raise to their employees. The bill gives them more money, AND THAT"S ALL THAT MATTERS TO THEM. They don't care about the money to Ukraine or the ridiculous "limits" on immigration that the bill is supposed to set (and which Biden won't enforce anyway - he's not enforcing the ones we have now). They don't care about any of the other provisions of the bill which will have little or no effect on stemming the tide. Why would they? That's the job of Congress to consider, not them.
