When I moved to CA long ago I never imagined so much concrete even existed.
Long time OC guy now. I don't know LA, at all, for that reason - it takes so long just to go 10 miles.
|
|
So, I know the little bubble called OC and don't really know much about LA.
OC used to be part of LA, ya know.
|
|
People from out of town consider OC part of LA still.

Man if you don't know the fwy system, you are truly a snail or clam who lives in a shell. Not a bad thing. Just a shame.
|
|
I always correct: OC is not LA.
And fuck that 'real OC' shit. Are we ever going to live that stupid shit down?
|
|
I always refer to it as "OC/LA" since it is all one big megalopolis.

I use to be a EMT
(BOTH HOSP AND 911 CALLS)
both oc and LA county.
With out gps... only using Thomas guide map books

Meh, it's like most large Metro Areas that are more than just the one with the 'lead' name.
Kansas City Chiefs don't play in Kansas, they play in Missouri.
Most people might know there are 5 boroughs in NY, but probbably just think of the whole thing as New York City
Etc, Etc.

Even in Orange Coutny there are areas. Like most Newport Beach people are hanging out in Brea or even Westminster. Heck even Huntington Beach people only interact with Newport when it's time to show off the pretty lights.

There was a bad MC accident on the S bound 405 today by Springdale around 10:45 am. Happened about 2 minutes ahead of us. Two guys on crotchrockets hauling ass and splitting lanes till one went down. They passed us doing about 80+. I hope and pray he is ok.

Meh, Glad I hate to drive

I learned these "lay of the land" of the Valley, LA, and OC by studying "gas station maps"... They were once a free service. Then as a young driver, I cruised the freeways, learning the sequence of off-ramps, and major streets.
Finally, I honed my skills on Thomas Guide atlases and delivering flowers for Conroy's. There were no GPS 35 years ago.

Reagan made GPS available for civie use in '83, after the USSR mistakenly shot down KAL flight 007. I remember commercial GPS receivers, oh maybe '91. Big, expensive equipment. Could not imagine today's availability, accuracy or real-time functionality back then.
Thomas Guides were amazing maps, best you could get. They were the paper product of digital mapping. I still remember when TG announced that they were introducing a new product - their digital map info was for sale.

Thomas Brothers
The only way to fly.
I have a new one from back in the '80s for Orange County.
A Garmin on the dash is a bit better.

I know the freeways...I just dont want to get on them at certain times of day! for me 10-2pm...that's it!

There's a reason why in LA we never talk about distance to a place, but only how long it will take to get there. Traffic conditions are so variable, time of day and even what day all make a difference. I'm in the west end of the SFV, so anywhere east of the 405 is always at least 30 minutes.
I've been driving here for around 45 years now, first learned the roads using a Thomas Guide... best teacher there ever was. You had to look locations up and figure out the route yourself, and hope for the best on the traffic. Most places now I can get to with a map, at least the area... but damn, love being able to tell to the minute how long the drive is now. And a breeze figuring out alternate routes, or options depending on traffic.

Any of the major sports games or concerts/venues will clog up traffic. When Superbowl ended yesterday, freeways were uncharacteristically crowded for an hour.
6am-9am and 3pm-7pm seem to be the worst times on 405, 101, 10, and 60 freeways, according to google maps traffic. I avoid those times and freeways if possible.
Recent heavy rains didn't help either.
As for "South Bay", I know the region you're talking about, but not sure which specific cities are included. When I hear South Bay, I think beaches, bluffs, rolling hills, industrial areas. Is the area unincorporated?

lived in the south bay for years so know exactly the area
in early days always had a thomas guide in the trunk and the freeway grit map was always in the glovecompartment.
its when they add freeways it becomes difficult, and many of them are toll roads.

Before Thomas, it was the shit map you bought at the gas station when you were filling up at 27 cents per gallon and topping up the radiator before making the climb up the Grapevine where you could watch other finned cars die.
GPS is golden pussy syndrome, what's that got to do with maps?
