Make sure whoever you are hiring is an established CA contractor (D-49) tree trimmer. The job you are asking about is fairly high risk. Don't hire some guy with a ladder at Home Depot.

ugh a few months ago.. i was trimming the branches of a huge ficus tree.. the ladder slipped and i went down.. my back was done for a week or so and i got super lucky not to break anything..
so yes be very careful, who u hire.. they could sue u and yikes.. who was i going to sue, myself haha

Make sure they are state licensed. You can go out to the state’s CSLB license check page to confirm it is a valid license.
Also make sure they have supplied you prior to any work being performed an insurance certificate with at minimum your address on it and showing workers comp insurance coverage. You do not want for there to be an injury of their employee on your property going onto your homeowners or rental insurance policy. Or even worse, if you don’t have insurance the employee coming after you personally.
Lastly, when getting your quote, ask them if that’s the best they can do.

Also, make sure they don’t use foot spikes to climb your tree. I had a tree trimmer do come work and apparently they had some type of tree plague in their hooks, carried over from another infected tree they worked on and it killed my 200 year old oak tree.
I had to pay another $800 too have it cut down and hauled away 1 year later.

He did an amazing job, and- equally important to me- my dad got along great with him and was very pleased with the way it all went down, every step of the way!
