I may be in the minority but not a fan. (spoiler alert - don't read if you haven't seen it yet) I've seen the very original version from 1984 like six times and found it far more compelling. This remake drops out things like the very cool weirding module, the creatures that fold space, the Fremen no longer have deep blue eyes reflecting their exposure to the Spice. Plus in the original the lead protagonist was called to lead the Fremen as the Sleeper awoke but in the remake he just keeps denying his fate then becomes a bit manical. I also think the original Harkonian characters were stronger. Lastly, the remake has way more emphasis on religious imagery and I thought the jihad aspect was way overplayed. Anyway, I could go on...thats my two cents.

I thought the first film was much better. The second was extremely long.

Do you have much experience in extremely long?

Have not seen part 2 but rewatched part 1, in prep.
1984 is a long time ago for special effects/cgi......so hard to compare the old and the new.
I get what you're saying about the story line changes but the old one just looks a bit cheesy now.
I'm loving The Foundation much more but they've made major changes in the screenplay from how the books went.

Haven't seen any Dune anything. The 80's one just looks incredibly cheesy; think I'll skip that altogether. I'll definitely stream part 1 & then see part 2 on the big screen.

The new Dune movies are much more faithful to the book than the 1980s movie.
The weirding modules were completely invented for the movie. In the book, "weirding" was a style of fighting, not a weapon. And jihad was a very essential element of the books, which was entirely ignored in the David Lynch version.

The epic story is complicated and filled with many interesting characters spanning a life time, so it's difficult to translate into a visual medium in two hour segments. I haven't seen the latest segment, although I like the first part much better than the baroque 1980s version by Dino De Laurentiis, Villeneuve's version is more faithful to Herbert's story IMHO.

I haven't read the book, though I have it on my bookshelf. I watched the 1980s video long ago and don't remember much from it.
Part 2 was beautiful with the scenery, locations, CGI. Vastness of the desert was well conveyed.
My theater erupted with cheers and applause at the most epic scene of the 2nd Act. Just amazing writing and production to build up, execute, and payoff.
Politics, oh there's so much going on. Politics = relationships. Need to keep track of all the characters, who said or did what, and how they're related to another character.
Acting by the 3 main characters were good. After watching Charlie Chocolate Factory, hard to believe this's Chalamet. And this's the most emotion I've seen out of Zendaya's acting.
I'll watch Part 3 for the visuals.

I liked it. I am probably in the minority. But ok!

Come on 2luv
Take the book down and read it
The books go so much deeper than a 2 hour movie can do justice
Sci fi is such a hard medium to translate into film and the Dune movies fail as most do
Side note
Was in a Mexican jail around 1978 and the Dune book was somehow available and a true lifeline
Ah the good old days

I'll admit to never having read the book so my perspective is not influenced by the fidelity to the book. And perhaps I would have had a different opinion if I did read the book. The challenge with Sci-Fi is to bring fantasy to life but to imbue the story line and script with intelligence and logic, which most don't. I think the best Sci-Fi creates base assumptions that indeed stretch the imagination but remain "believable" by not asking the viewing to suspend their disbelief to the breaking point. Anyway, thats my take.

Fid, I think I'll wait till the conclusion of the 3rd movie and maybe I'll read the book.
I played the 1990s video game, so much nostalgia.
I'm hoping someone makes an animated tv series. The book may translate better as anime versus live action.
BTW, did anybody get the AMC popcorn bucket?

Anyone notice the Monty Python reference?
