     Senate will keep legislative filibuster.
Senator McConnell announced tonight that 2 Democratic Senators are against removing the filibuster. So Democrats don't have enough votes to get rid of it.

I think this is good news. I'm hoping it will force Biden to be more moderate. He will need to get 10 moderate Senate Republicans on board.

Moderate Democrats and Republicans now have a lot of power.

California Governor Gavin Newsom expected to lift strict stay-at-home orders, sources say
"Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to lift California's strict stay-at-home orders he imposed on much of the state in December.

In a letter to restaurant owners, the California Restaurant Association says sources tell them that officials with Gov. Newsom's office plan to lift the stay-at-home orders in all regions of the state on Monday."

I guess you have to balance out the economy and defeating the virus, but from an epidemiological point of view, this is a mistake. We shouldn't be reducing any measure until new cases become very low. Keeping cases high around will give it more ability to mutate into another variant that could possibly escape from the immunity produced by vaccines. It already has mutated enough in South Africa to possibly weaken the effectiveness of vaccines.

Trump doing well for Middle East peace before leaving office.
Israel and Morocco have agreed to normalize relations. This is the fourth Arab-Israeli agreement in four months. The first three countries that agreed to normalize relations have been the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

The agreement should give Israel eventually more leverage in talks with Palestinians for a two-state solution whereby Palestinians would recognize the right for Israel as a Jewish state to exist.

Southern California stay at home order to start Sat Dec 5 at 1 pm
for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Just so you folks know.

The reason: ICU capacity was below 15% (13.1%) as of Friday.

"Regions...must close hair salons, barber shops, movie theaters, ban restaurant service except for takeout and delivery, shutter playgrounds, and limit retail stores and shopping centers to 20% customer capacity."

"The order also prohibits gatherings of any size and requires people to wear masks and practice physical distancing in public."

Sorry to all the people who's business will be affected. Stay safe people.

     Britain announces 4-week lockdown
Joins France and Germany
And this is from a conservative PM.

Proves that all the nonsense that lockdowns don't work is bullshit. The leaders know--even conservative ones--that when there's a big danger of uncontrolled transmission, that lockdowns work.

When this wave hits the US as hard as it has hit Europe, we're going to be locking down too. At least states with sensible governors will. And for states that don't, there will be disaster.

Not saying there aren't economic repercussions, but we're talking many lives here.

Say something nice about the candidate you aren’t voting for!
Ok Hxers. Here’s a big challenge! See if you even can do it! Say something nice about the Presidential candidate you aren’t voting for.

Make it genuine. No backhanded shit.

Ok. I’ll start.

Trump’s throwing a massive amount of resources to bring forth a vaccine and monoclonal antibodies may end up working out really well and may help us and other nations get control over this pandemic. If his Operation Warp Speed does this, Trump should be in serious consideration of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Only 12% of OC residents have had COVID-19
New paper out today that took a random sample of OC residents between July and August shows that only 11.5% of people had COVID-19 at that time. After 4 or so months of prevalence of the disease in the OC.

This figure is 7 times greater than the total case statistic used by the county. So you have to figure that the vast majority of cases were asymptomatic.

If we assume that the seroprevalence is still 7 time greater than reported cumulative cases, we can extrapolate seroprevalence today. (This is a rough, back-of-the-envelope type calculation). There are 55,892 cases today (Oct 12), reported by the OC healthcare agency. 7 times that figure divided by an OC population of 3.2 million is 12.2%. So the estimated percentage of people who have had COVID is roughly 12.2% today. After 7 months prevalence of the disease.

Only 12.2% of the OC population having COVID-19 means that most people can still be infected by the virus that causes COVID-19. A LOOOONNNGGGG way to go if we want to get to the standard herd immunity values of 60-80%. Meaning trying to get to herd immunity (if that's even possible) without restricting social connectivity is likely a too-time-consuming and/or too-costly pipedream.

     VP debate Part 2
Continue on...

Pence won hands down, but I’d want to fact check him on a lot of things. Harris just didn’t bring it tonight. Very surprised.

Pence can make bad news sound good somehow.

New England Journal of Medicine, for the first time ever, called for an incumbent President to be vo
...

"The response of our nation’s leaders has been consistently inadequate. The federal government has largely abandoned disease control to the states. Governors have varied in their responses, not so much by party as by competence. But whatever their competence, governors do not have the tools that Washington controls. Instead of using those tools, the federal government has undermined them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was the world’s leading disease response organization, has been eviscerated and has suffered dramatic testing and policy failures. The National Institutes of Health have played a key role in vaccine development but have been excluded from much crucial government decision making. And the Food and Drug Administration has been shamefully politicized, appearing to respond to pressure from the administration rather than scientific evidence. Our current leaders have undercut trust in science and in government, causing damage that will certainly outlast them. Instead of relying on expertise, the administration has turned to uninformed 'opinion leaders' and charlatans who obscure the truth and facilitate the promulgation of outright lies."

...

"Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences. Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs.”

I have no problem if the Republicans choose another SC justice before the elections...
...the more I think about it.

There is enough time. The President is a Republican. The Senate is Republican. Trump has been choosing high quality people to be on the Supreme Court. Yes, they are conservative, but they are quality jurists.

Amy Coney Barrett appears to be a quality jurist.

If the Democrats are mad, learn to win elections because they all matter.

My 2 cents.
