Automobile ownership: No one can match my record (Inspired by the posts below)
Summary: 53 years of owning cars, owned only 4 cars, still have 2 of them
For you youngsters who do not yet know what inflation is, details are included
#1) 1963 Buick Special station:
Bought used from my mother in 1965 for $1,000
Cars in those days were idiot-proof: the driver could not lock himself out because the key had to be used to lock the doors
"Traded in" (was charitable of the dealer) on vehicle #2 for $100
Mileage: almost 100,000
Gasoline: $.29/gallon
#2) 1973 Olds Cutlass Supreme:
Ordered new through a fellow Army Reservist for 100 over dealer cost
Sticker price: $5,400
My price: $4,400
Self-serve gasoline: $.39/gallon
Junked; got about $75
Mileage: about 130,000 (transmission slipping, body rust from living near beach)
#3) 1986 Toyota Camry:
Bought through fleet manager at a San Diego dealer for $10,000
Gasoline: above $1/gallon
Mileage: now 276,000
#4) 2003 Mazda MPV:
Paid $20,000
Mileage: now 111,000
I hope to never buy another vehicle. (For both cars having another key made costs $10 or less.)
