Today in gloom: just when you thought it was safe to be free of covid
It’s jumping species:
“ Since making the leap to people the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 has wrought havoc on human populations. Now the virus appears to be surging among some wild animals as well. A new US government study of white-tailed deer reported that many had been infected, raising the potential that even if the virus is eventually controlled or even eradicated in humans, another common animal could provide it a reservoir and spawn future outbreaks. ”
Further,
“ The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service tested 481 samples collected between January 2020 and March 2021 from deer in Illinois, New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania and found that 33 percent tested positive for antibodies to the COVID-19 virus. While many animals appeared to have been infected—more than 60 percent of samples in Michigan tested positive, for example—the agency said there were no reports of deer appearing clinically ill.”
And last but not least.
“ Researchers want to know how the deer got infected in the first place. Linda Saif, a virologist at The Ohio State University told Nature that a critical question is “how the virus spread to deer and if it will spread from infected deer to other wildlife or to domestic livestock such as cattle.” The animal and plant health service said the deer could have been exposed to the virus by people, other deer, other animals, or the environment. They have flown to California to question Angler, but he was not available for comment.”

Today in gloom: the war has changed
The full scope of the delta covid-19 variant is becoming clearer.
“ The delta variant of the coronavirus appears to cause more severe illness than earlier variants and spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal federal health document that argues officials must “acknowledge the war has changed.”
The document is an internal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention slide presentation, shared within the CDC and obtained by The Washington Post. It captures the struggle of the nation’s top public health agency to persuade the public to embrace vaccination and prevention measures, including mask-wearing, as cases surge across the United States and new research suggests vaccinated people can spread the virus.
It cites a combination of recently obtained, still-unpublished data from outbreak investigations and outside studies showing that vaccinated individuals infected with delta may be able to transmit the virus as easily as those who are unvaccinated. Vaccinated people infected with delta have measurable viral loads similar to those who are unvaccinated and infected with the variant.“

Arizona audit, part 2. The world calls bullshit

“The security detail for Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs arrived first at the café where I met her on a blistering hot day. Since the 2020 election, she has received death threats and armed protesters have turned up outside her home.
"It's a sham," she said of the ballot counting. "This is not a real election audit". But the exercise could cause real destruction.
"I'm very concerned about what Trump's followers' response is going to be when their audit report comes out," she said.
Secretary Hobbs is a Democrat, but her sentiments are shared by many Republicans who fear their party and country are being further divided by the audit. Every elected official in Maricopa County - most of them Republicans - signed a letter dismissing it as a "circus".
The audit "is a black eye to the state of Arizona and Maricopa County and it needs to stop," said Bill Gates, a Maricopa County supervisor, adding that it's "tearing at the foundations of our Democratic Republic".
Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County Recorder, agreed. He is "100 percent confident" that the election results in Arizona were accurate, he said, and feared this audit will discourage voters from turning up at future elections.”

On that Sunday morning, Bennu will pass Earth five times closer than the Moon, based on current estimates. The uncertainty is still wide enough that it might hit our planet or miss it, but it remains concerning. Bennu is over 500 meters (1,640 feet) across, and an impact would release 1,200 megatons of energy. That’s 24 times the yield of the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear weapon ever built and tested.”
The Chinese are proposing a plan to gradually nudge it away, should the threat become real.
Good news is that most of us will be gone by then, but I know some youngsters here and people who are thinking about the next generation that are concerned.
