Community Governance

This site is a social network is a little different from others you might be used to.

It is entirely controlled by the members of the community.

From deciding what is or is not acceptable behavior, to whether a member is even allowed to continue being a member, the community members decide.

The community decides by voting. Member can vote on the following issues:

Object TypeOperation
Blog post/commentQuarantine Release
Deletion
Locking/Unlocking
MemberQuarantine Release
Muting
Excommunication
Profile Deletion
ClassifiedsQuarantine Release
Deactivation

Voting and Counter-Voting

Community members that have been released from Quarantine and have enough ratings from others to give them influence can vote on the above issues, but some of the issues maybe a counter-voted on.

This is not meant to be in any way accurate, but let's say it takes 5 votes to delete a blog comment. And let's also say that 4 members have voted to delete it. So it will only take 1 more vote to delete it. But 3 community members do not feel that this comment should be deleted. They can counter-vote, that is, vote to NOT delete it. They do so, and now there is only 1 effective vote to delete it, and needs 4 more votes to delete, assuming no more counter votes occur.

The example just stated is completely inaccurate. Not all votes are created equal. Votes are weighted based on the voter's network ratings.

So one vote might count for more than another vote. The theory is that the community as a whole has given particular members that have proven their worth more influence.

In addition, for issues that directly involve a member, the member in question has an automatic counter-vote. For example, to delete a comment or mute a member, that member automatic has their vote cast in the direction that benefits them. So, in the case of a comment deletion vote, if someone with little weight votes to delete the comment, the progress bar may show the total vote count to be in the "keep" half. This just means the author of the comment had more weight than the voter.

Disagreements

As a system of checks and balances to ensure accountability, especially considering votes are effectively anonymous, Humaniplex.com incorporates a disagreement system.

For any vote, you can disagree with it.

This does NOT mean that you are affecting the outcome of the vote!

What you ARE doing is affecting the voter. By disagreeing with a vote, even though you don't know who the voter is, you are giving them a small negative Judgment rating by logging a disgreement.

In addition to disagreeing with votes, you can also disagree with anonymous network ratings (Judgment, Integrity, Reliability, Karma). You can not disagree with Safety ratings, because they are public. If you disagree with a Safety rating, you can log a negative Judgment rating directly against the rater.

So basically, you can choose to disagree (and thereby giving the voter or rater a small negative Judgment rating) with ANY anonymous vote or rating.

When you look at the voting history of an object, such as a blog comment, if you have influence (voting rights), and you are logged in, you will see checkboxes in a "Disagree" column. Just check the boxes next to the votes you disagree with, and click the "Disagree" button.

How to Vote

For blog posts/comments, just click the little voting icon. A panel will drop down under the comment. For the post voting panel, click the same voting icon, but to the left of the post subject.

To vote to release a comment, click the Quarantine icon on the comment. A panel will drop down.

To vote to release a member from Quarantine, or mute or excommunicate a member, go to their profile, and you will see a box down the left side of the screen with information about the member. In that box, you will see a link to release someone from Quarantine (assuming they are quaratined), and a link to censure the member. The censure link allows you to vote to mute or excommunicate the person.

If a profile is inappropriate, you can vote to clear it out. There is a button that is labeled "Flag Profile".

The same goes for classifieds. If it you feel it is not appropriate, vote to flag it down.

The same Quarantine and voting icons appear on classifieds listings. Click them to drop the contorl panel down and log the various available votes.
